Licensed attorneys seeking admission to the California Bar have unique exam preparation needs. Because most are unfamiliar with exam strategy and the specific demands of the California Bar Exam, some level of bar exam technique must be learned. Moreover, licensed attorneys typically specialize in very narrow areas of law, and therefore have substantial gaps in their knowledge of the substantive principles tested on the California Bar Exam. For this reason, subject matter review is also necessary. Yet, because many licensed attorneys are burdened with the responsibility of sustaining thriving practices while preparing for the exam, a typical survey prep course with daily live or video lectures is a poor fit.

The Bar Code Essay Writing Workshop, Performance Test Workshop and Essay Intensive are popular alternatives for self-motivated attorneys with busy schedules who have a home study plan in place for exhaustive substantive review (usually through the use of books acquired secondhand). The Essay Writing and Performance Test Workshops are offered on weekends, through one-day and two-day lectures. These workshops cover the techniques and skills essential to understanding how to write for the California Bar Exam and communicate the legal principles in a grader-friendly way. All workshops are taught by former bar graders. The workshops, however, are not substantive in nature and should be used as a supplement - not a substitute - for a survey program. The Essay Intensive is a great alternative for licensed attorneys who are only able to commit to sitting in a LIVE class on weekends but still desire detailed feedback and critique on their practice written work. The Essay Intensive is a substantive course, but does not comprehensively cover every principle tested on the California Bar Exam. Instead, the course is created to deliver bite-size, absorbable bits of key information about the topics most frequently tested on the exam and with which most students struggle. Strategies for approaching these topics (with extensive examples) are discussed at length. The technical side of exam writing (taught in the one-day Essay Writing Workshop) is included in the Essay Intensive. Feedback on 13 essays is also included. In limited situations, the Private Tutorial may be the ideal alternative for attorneys taking the California Bar Exam. Attorneys who are not working full-time and who desire the maximum amount of individualized attention are considered ideal candidates for the Private Tutorial. Attorneys who have already failed the California Bar Exam (or any other bar exam) are also considered ideal candidates for the Private Tutorial. In all situations, The Bar Code Cheat Sheets in Action textbook should be used in conjunction with self-study or any other course. For a full description and samples of this publication, please click here.
