The Essay-Writing Workshop is a seminar designed to teach students the techniques of essay writing from a bar grader‘s perspective. It is the foundation of The Bar Code methodology and a recommended course for all students participating in our program or using our publications.
The workshop is LIVE and includes lessons in how Bar Exam essays are scored ("debunking the myths about the graders and their process") and the top six reasons why people fail the Bar Exam despite having a solid understanding of the law. These include improper IRAC structure (known as IREACT), jumping to the answer, bad unfolding, merging issues, recognizing and writing about "non-issues," weak factual analysis and time mismanagement. A discussion of essay formatting and style (from a bar grader's perspective) will also be included.
As part of the workshop, the students will also review five examples of failing essay answers to a Bar Exam question and discuss methods for improving them. A review and discussion of the California State Bar website released answers will follow. General suggestions for how to use and follow State Bar website answers will be included.
The Bar Code Essay-Writing Workshop does not cover the substantive material tested on the California Bar Exam. Students interested in a more in-depth review of essay-writing for the individual subjects tested on the Bar Exam, as well as feedback on their essays, should consider the Essay Intensive or private tutorial programs.
